The Danish Conductor Anne Marie Granau studied as a scholar at The Royal College of Music with Neil Thomson (conducting), Kenneth Hesketh (orchestration) and Kathron Sturrock (piano). As a young conductor she also graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music as a young conductor studying with Dan-Olof Stenlund and Frans Rasmussen (conducting), Else Paaske (vocal studies), Karsten Fundal (orchestration), Ejnar Kanding (musical analysis) and Nina Gade (piano).
Recognition of her talent was marked by celebrated international conductors when she was asked to assist Bernard Haitink, and to prepare orchestras for Vasily Petrenko, Sir Roger Norrington, Martin André and Andrew Litton.
Her extraordinary understanding of contemporary music saw her invited to collaborate with the Contemporary Consort in London where the focal point was ‘Threats and Declamations’, an acclaimed work by the renowned composer Kenneth Hesketh, as well as recordings of music by young composers from The Royal College of Music.
Her talent was also recognised by the British Youth Opera who engaged her to work on the Opera in repertory ‘Eugene Onegin’ as assistant, back stage and cover conductor. Her work as a an artist with skills in bringing young artists to excellence in performance was used to great effect as she conducted a performance of understudies in its entirety, accompanied by the professional South Bank Sinfonia.
Her growing reputation as a conductor drew further invitations to conduct in both The United Kingdom and in Denmark. Based on her success as an operatic conductor she subsequently was invited to conduct at the Britten International Opera School, Ravel’s “L’Enfant et les sortilèges”, “L’Heure Espagnole”, and then for the Woodhouse Opera, Janacek’s “Cunning Little Vixen”.
Anne Marie’s work and specialism in the contemporary field drew the attention of the legendary Jane Manning, for whom she was invited to work with on Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire”.
In Denmark Anne Marie assisted Thomas Dausgaard, chief conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, in three major projects, she conducted the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, the renowned vocal ensemble “Ars Nova”, and the Danish Youth SO in the Sydney Opera House. She was also chief conductor of the DUSIKA Youth SO (county of Copenhagen).
Anne Marie’s expertise in the fields of both contemporary music and opera came together when she was co-conducting the world premiere of “Heart in a Plastic Bag” by Finish-Serbian Jovanka Trbojevic for Opera Nord and Athelas Sinfonietta in March 2008. Anne Marie was in charge of the majority of the musical rehearsals, and co-conducted all performances.
Her dedication as a young aspiring conductor shone through her workshops with Bernard Haitink, Marin Alsop, Leif Segerstam, Alexander Polischuk and Helmuth Rilling.
As a scholar at The Royal College of Music her focus was on orchestral and opera conducting where she excelled. The young conductor Anne Marie Granau has been recognised as a talent for the future and has personally received many awards. She is proud in particular to receive the honour of an endorsement from Her Majesty of Denmark Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik’s Foundation, Prince Joachim and Alexandras’ Foundation. Additional honours were bestowed upon her from The Conductors’ Association DK, The Royal Danish Academy of Music and Wilhelm Hansen Foundation.
Anne Marie's forthcoming engagements include concerts with Ars Nova Copenhagen (DK), Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen (DK), Opera Gala at Jægerspris Castle (DK) and St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic (RU).
