The Canadian/Dutch conductor, Gregory Hubert, is rapidly becoming a very respected member of the Dutch musical community His attention to detail, excellent rehearsal and pedagogical skills, combined with a profound feeling and knowledge of music, a dynamic personality and a deep understanding of people makes him popular with both professional and amateur players, choirs, soloists, audiences and press.
Gregory began piano lessons at the age of four and later studied cello with David Hethrington (Toronto S.O.), Denis Brott and Desmond Hoebig in Toronto and participated in masterclasses with Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Harrell. His experience as a professional cellist has given him a broad knowledge of symphonic literature and an intimate working knowledge of the orchestra as his "instrument"
As an accomplished chamber musician and cellist, Mr. Hubert has enjoyed the opportunity of performing under distinguished conductors such as Erich Leinsdorf, Vaclav Neumann, Andrew Davis, Jose-luis Garcia, and Victor Feldbrill (my best conducting teachers!)
In 1988 Greg was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Oakville Symphony Orchestra (with David Miller) and was also Assistant-Principal cello. After several very successful performances with this orchestra, he was pursuaded to actively pursue serious conducting studies abroad. In 1990 he was accepted to study conducting with Enrique Garcia-Asensio and the Real Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Madrid, Spain.
During his studies, Greg had the opportunity to conduct the Spanish Radio & Television orchestra and attend two masterclasses with Sergui Celibidache. In addtion to his studies, Gregory worked as Musical Director/Copmposer of ARTEA Teatro Estudio. (Now defunct, avant-guard theater company)
In 1993, Mr. Hubert emigrated to the Netherlands, where in the past eight years he has been conductor and artistic director of no less than six orchestras (highly-trained amatures), among others; the Colenso Consort (founding conductor), the Utrecht Chamber Orchestra "Trajectum" and the Philharmonic Orchestra "Mozart" in Amsterdam.
During the summer of 1999, Gregory was invited to participate in the International Workshop for Conductors in the Czech Republic, under the direction of Kirk Trevor and Marius Smolij, and conducted the Martinu Chamber Orchestra and the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic.
Mr. Hubert has gained an outstanding reputation among soloists; collaborating with professional artists such as: Janine Jansen (violin), Dimitry Ferschtman (cello), Gert-Jan Alders (baritone), Maya Roodveld (soprano), Maarten Jansen (cello), David Jansen (harpsichord), Cor de Jong (organ), Joop Everts, Lawinia Meijer (harp), Jeremy Findlay (cello), Lisette Emmink (soprano) and Klaas Vellinga (organ).
Outside of his "work", Greg is extremely interested in the music of the "youth of today", to the point where he has been a jury member of the Amsterdam Music Productions "Battle of the Bands", final round, held in May 2002, in the Melkweg in Amsterdam.
Greg currently resides in Scheveningen (the Hague) and during his free time (if any!) enjoys writing, playing chess, swimming, surfing (sound waves as well!), cycling, sailing, listening to modern music, and is also an accomplished horseman.
